Being able to handle conflict in a constructive and sensible manner is an important life skill. Conflict can come in all forms and can happen in our personal and professional lives. Not many people possess the skills to manage conflict appropriately; while most might think they can handle conflict reasonably well, that doesn't mean that the conflict is being appropriately managed for all parties involved.

Mediation lets the conflicting parties have control, but there is still a mediator present to help. Whereas arbitration has an arbitrator present, who acts like a private judge that has all the control and control over what the outcome will be. Regardless, both mediation and arbitration are ways to resolve the conflicts while staying out of the courtroom. In this paper, I will compare mediation and arbitration by explaining the function, role, and effectiveness of each in resolving conflicts.

Unless you live inside a cave and never deal with other people, conflict is an inevitable part of our lives. Just knowing how to deal with conflicts personally is not enough, especially if the other party doesn't handle conflict in a constructive and appropriate manner.
